Fabulously Fun Halloween Desserts: Here Kitty, Kitty!

It’s a recipe that’s so incredibly clever (and delicious) that it has made its way to the top of the must-have dessert list at Halloween gatherings from coast-to-coast.

Some call it Kitty Litter Cake, while others refer to it as Kitty Poo Cake or Kitty Dung Dessert. Regardless of its unappetizing name, it is always a hit with guests. I wish I knew who came up with the original recipe (somehow I doubt it’s Martha Stewart). I’d give them an A+ for creativity and a B+ for taste (you might give it an A, but I am not a big Tootsie Roll fan).

If you are looking for a Halloween dessert that will catch the eye of wandering Cyclops, ghosts, ghouls, goblins… and your own pet cat, this recipe should be at the top of your list.

KITTY LITTER CAKE

Ingredients:

1 package spice cake mix

1 package white cake mix

1 package white sandwich cookies (I use Wal-Mart Vanilla Creme Sandwich Cookies)

1 package vanilla pudding mix

Green food coloring

12 Mini Tootsie Rolls

1 new, unused kitty litter box

1 new, unused pooper scooper

Directions:

Prepare cakes according to directions on the boxes.

Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble cake.

Crumble white sandwich cookies by placing them in a Ziploc bag and smashing with a rolling pin. Make sure they are smashed into small bits. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup of the cookie crumbs.

Add a few drops green food coloring to the crumbs and mix well.

Crumble cakes into a large bowl. Gently toss cake with half the remaining cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding; gently combine.

Line new, clean kitty litter box. Place mixture into litter box.

Place three unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until soft. Shape ends so they curve slightly. Repeat with three more Tootsie Rolls and bury in cake mixture.

Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs on top of the cake mixture and melted Tootsie Rolls.

Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly over the top, to make it look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter.

Heat remaining Tootsie Rolls, 3 at a time in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle with cookie crumbs.

Serve with a new pooper scooper.
