Fad Diets: The Grapefruit Diet or New Mayo Diet

(This diet has no connection to the Mayo Clinic.) This diet promises that you’ll lose 52 pounds if you follow it properly for 10 weeks. Most of us can lose about that much by exercising every day and replacing a fatty meal with a salad every day but there seems to be more attraction to following a rigid diet like this.

There are lots of rules to this diet:

* As with all diets, you must drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water every day.
You can eat at every meal until you are full (the items listed are the minimums you must eat at each meal).

* You cannot eliminate anything or make substitutions although you may increase your meats and vegetables, including salads. Supposedly the more you eat, the more you’ll lose.

* Limit coffee to only one cup at mealtime.

* Don’t eat between meals.

* You may use butter for cooking.

* Follow the diet for 12 days, take two days off and then repeat.

* You may not eat any desserts, breads, white vegetables (like potatoes) or sweet potatoes.

The menu:

Breakfast:
Eat 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces unsweetened grapefruit juice, two eggs any style and two slices of bacon.

Lunch:
Eat 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces unsweetened grapefruit juice, salad with any dressing and meat (any style and any amount).

Dinner:
Eat 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces unsweetened grapefruit juice, salad with any dressing or a red or green vegetable cooked in butter or spices, meat or fish (any style cooked any way) and one cup of coffee or tea.

Bedtime Snack:
Drink an 8 ounce glass of tomato juice or skim milk.

You may eat the following vegetables in your salads:

Red onions, bell peppers, radishes, broccoli, cucumbers, carrots, green onions, leaf spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, cole slaw, and any green vegetables.

Any seasoned dieter will see that this is pure and simple a low-carb diet. If you fill up on meats at mealtimes, you may just make it through this diet without gnawing your arm off for a snack.
