Fairytopia: Mermaidia (2006)

mermaidIn the movie “Fairytopia,” we met Elina, a wingless fairy who must save the rest of the fairies from the fate prescribed for them by Laverna, an enchantress who is determined to take over the land. Elina is helped along the way by the prince of the merpeople, Prince Nalu, who feeds Elina some magic seaweed which allows her to breathe underwater. He saves Elina’s life and she defeats Laverna.

In “Fairytopia: Mermaidia,” it’s Elina’s turn to save Prince Nalu’s life. Laverna is back, more determined than ever to overthrow the kingdom and rule it herself. The Enchantress, Laverna’s sister and the rightful ruler of the land, has kept Laverna at bay with her magic, but Laverna has discovered a magic berry which grows in the sea. If she eats the berry, it will make her immune to her sister’s magic.

Because the berry grows underwater, Laverna has asked Prince Nalu for help in finding it. Knowing the danger of allowing Laverna to find the Immunity Berry, Nalu refuses to tell her, and is taken captive by the Fungus, Laverna’s slimy henchmen.

A seabutterfly comes to tell Elina all that has happened to Prince Nalu. Remembering how he helped her, she leaves immediately to find him. Upon reaching the water, she finds some of the magic seaweed and eats it, becoming once again able to swim underwater. With her faithful friend Bibble at her side, they go in search of Prince Nalu.

Meanwhile, Fungus Maximus, the leader of the Fungi, is threatening to pour poison into the water. If Nalu does not tell him where to find the berry, he will make the water uninhabitable and all Nalu’s people will suffer. When Elina arrives, she sees the poison and guesses Fungus’s plans.

She must act quickly if she’s to save Nalu and his ocean as well, but there’s one slight problem – Nalu’s girlfriend Nori. (Who, incidentally, is named after edible seaweed) Nori thinks Elina has come because she’s in love with Nalu. Once she convinces Nori that she and Nalu are just friends, Elina is able to enlist the help of the mermaid.

There are many good things about this movie, such as lessons about friendship and loyalty. I wasn’t crazy about the tattoo Elina is given as a badge of courage –I hesitate for my children to think that tattoos are desirable at such young ages. But other than that, it was a hit at my house, as are all the movies in the Barbie series. My two favorites are still “Nutcracker” and “Princess and the Pauper.”
