New England is a premiere destinations for viewing fall foliage. Think about it; what could be better than spending the day with your family exploring one of Connecticut’s vast orchards on a golden autumn day?
From historic landmarks to natural wonders, New England offers some offbeat ways to spend a crisp fall day. Take a look:
WITCH’S DUNGEON
As Halloween approaches the Witch’s Dungeon Classic Movie Museum in Bristol, Connecticut (located 20 miles southwest of Hartford) offers a behind-the-scenes look at what it took to create Frankenstein’s monster and how the Phantom of the Opera got on stage.
For a limited time (until the end of October) the museum is allowing visitors to get up close and personal with the likes of Count Dracula, the Fly, and the Werewolf of London. A special exhibit, which displays the lifelike renditions (most sport real human hair and prosthetic glass eyeballs) in elaborate showcases, pays homage to the actors and makeup artists behind the legendary ghoulish movie characters.
Actors, including Mark Hamill of “Star Wars” fame and June Foray, the voice of Rocky the Squirrel and Natasha in the series “Rocky and Bullwinkle,” have donated props to the museum for this special exhibit.
THE BIG E
It’s the one place in New England where you can touch a shark, gorge on corn dogs and listen to Joan Jett all at the same time.
I’m referring to The Big E, New England’s largest fair. The big event gets underway next weekend in West Springfield, Massachusetts and is guaranteed to put a smile on your kid’s face.
How can it not with a free circus, a horse show, a midway filled with thrill rides, live musical performances (including Joan Jett, Taylor Hicks, Trace Adkins and Montgomery Gentry), 50,000 cream puffs and a 7,000-gallon shark aquarium?
In addition to those highlights, this year’s fair is hosting Cultura 2007, a celebration of Hispanic heritage; appearances by celebrity PBS television chefs Daisy Martinez and Lidia Bastianich; and daily Mardi Gras parades.
