We were in Toy R Us the other day and my 2-year-old ran into their Halloween costume display. That’s right. Directly across from the back-to-school gear stood dozens of Halloween costumes. Of course, my daughter decided this was a golden opportunity to play dress up and tried on at least seven furry animal costumes (never mind that it was pushing 90 degrees outside). After about an hour (can you say overindulgent parent) she finally decided that this year she would be trick-or-treating as a gold giraffe with brown spots (she was a Dalmatian last year).
So what does this have to do with a blog on fall fashion? After our trip to the toy store we headed over to WalMart where I paged through a fashion magazine and saw an article about “Fablous Fall Fashions.” According to fashion experts, this season it’s all about metallics, specifically gold. Apparently, all that glitters is gold in clothing, accessories and accents on everything.
In case you were wondering if this hot look is more fad than trend. Experts say it’s all trend and it’s here to stay.
“Any age can wear it, whether it’s a thread in a gold shirt or hardware on a bag, it’s a trend that isn’t going anywhere,” says editors at Glamour Magazine.
I know what you are thinking: “Didn’t we see this same metallic trend back in the ’80’s?” I would have to agree with you (after all, that’s when I begged my mother for a pair of metallic silver flats to wear to a high school dance). But experts say, think again.
“The thing about gold this season is that it’s not as opulent and aggressive as we have seen in the past years. In fact, gold now looks new because we area painting it with darker colors and more women can wear it now more than ever,” says the Glamour fashion team.
Hot items include: the gold miniskirt—in a more burnished shade that looks almost more like khaki; the gold sweater (the one I saw looked more like an oatmeal color with gold specks); and layered gold chains or a gold chain belt for an additional touch.
However, fashion experts say if you’re going to go gold, do it sparingly. Make sure that you aren’t glimmering in gold from head-to-toe. Instead, try wearing one piece of gold at a time and start with basics like a shoe, evening bag or even earrings.
“I think that we are going to begin to treat gold like any other color, not like a metallic,” says a Glamour fashion editor.
Nice to know my daughter will be trick-or-treating in style.
