If it weren’t for Disney’s Chip and Dale I doubt my preschooler would know that chipmunks actually like acorns. As far as she is concerned, the tiny rodent-like creatures only have eyes for the stale bread she throws at them whenever we are at the park. As for the acorns that are strewn all over the grassy areas leading up to the playground, they go straight into my daughter’s pockets and come home with us.
When we get home we put her acorn collection to good use by making the following projects:
ACORN WREATH
Materials:
Acorns
Wreath Form
Hot glue gun
Glue sticks
Newspaper
Dry flowers, bows, or other decorations
Directions:
Spread out newspaper on a large flat surface.
Place wreath form on newspaper.
Starting in the middle of the wreath, place glue on the bottom of the acorns, then attach them onto the form with the acorns standing straight up. Make one row in a straight line going all the way around the wreath. Repeat the process from top to bottom.
Allow wreath to dry completely.
Embellish wreath with remaining decorations. Glue on flowers or attach bows. You could even add a few holiday ornaments.
The back of the wreath shouldn’t have any embellishments on it, so it will hang straight.
Note: A wreath hanger is recommended, as the wreath is quite heavy.
ACORN FRAMES
This is an easy way to embellish old frames and present them as seasonal gifts to grandparents or other loved ones.
Materials:
Old frames (5×7 size works best) or cheap ones that you can find at the Dollar Store
Hot Glue Gun
Clear Sealer
Directions:
Cover a large flat surface with newspaper.
Remove glass from frames.
Glue acorns around the frame in a design of your choice. You can cover the entire frame with acorns or simply place a few in the corners as accents. If you have a larger frame you could pencil in a decorative pattern and glue the acorns over your drawing.
Once the acorns are in place apply clear sealer to the entire surface of the frame.
Allow frame to dry thoroughly before inserting picture.
