Forget about combing the aisles of Michaels or Hobby Lobby for unique fall decorations. Instead, head outside for inspiration… and super cheap materials.
And by super cheap I mean free.
Yes, Mother Nature’s got Michaels beat in regards to price and accessibility. From gorgeous colored leaves to acorns, gourds and whimsically-shaped branches, you can gather an entire room’s worth of natural items from your own backyard, and then flex your creative muscle to design one-of-a-kind fall decorations.
Here are some simple ideas that even your kids can make:
LEAF PEOPLE: Lay out a large piece of craft paper and trace your child’s body on it with some chalk or a pencil. Next, have your son or daughter gather a bag full of fallen leaves. Encourage them to get a mix of colors, including reds, yellows and orange. Then, fill in the tracing with craft glue before allowing your child to adhere the leaves to the paper. Be sure to fill the entire body so that no white space is seen on the final product. Finally, once the glue has dried completely, cut-out the leaf body, attach it to thick cardboard, and place it on your porch for the neighbors to admire.
MINI PUMPKIN PARADE: Collect a half-dozen or so mini pumpkins or other small gourds to decorate your dining room table or mantle. Place two fall-colored tapered candles in holders and use them to anchor your pumpkin parade. Next, spread out a fall-themed table runner or long piece of fabric along the length of your mantle. Depending on the size of your table or mantle, you could use a pretty orange, yellow or crimson scarf as a substitute for the printed fabric. Finally, place the mini pumpkins in a row on the table or mantle. You can also strategically place a few leaves, small branches and a little moss in between each pumpkin to give the decoration added dimension.
