If you are a history buff you don’t want to miss the opportunity to visit Baltimore, Maryland. The area is filled with educational attractions for families with children of all ages. What’s more, fall is the ideal time to visit. The massive summer crowds have dispersed and the weather is a lot more pleasant, which means your overall experience at the following attractions is almost guaranteed to be a positive one.
GETTYSBURG
Even if you dozed off during 7th grade American History you likely know the significance of Gettysburg. The site of the Civil War’s most famous battle and the place where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address is open to the public on a daily basis. While there you can tour exhibits at the visitor’s center, which explain the Battle of Gettysburg and its impact on the country. I would also recommend climbing to the top of the 393-foot Gettysburg National Tower, which provides an expansive view of the battlefield and surrounding area.
ANNAPOLIS
The capital of Maryland is just a short 45-minute drive southeast of Baltimore. It is home to the U.S. Naval Academy and is brimming with colonial flavor. It is also home to some of the most incredibly expensive waterfront real estate in the nation. Take a day to explore the historic district, the capital building, and the harbor front area known as the City Dock, the Naval Academy and St. John’s College. I would also highly recommend stopping in one of the area’s eateries to try some of the freshest Chesapeake seafood.
DEEP CREEK LAKE STATE PARK
This popular recreation area is located about two hours northwest of downtown Baltimore. It’s a drive, but if you have the time and you have had enough of hands on history lessons then I would recommend the trip. The 4,000-acre park is a nature lover’s paradise. It provides activities like fishing, swimming, boating, hiking and camping. The park is also home to an expansive system of trails, which allows for day- as well as weeklong treks. If you are too tired to drive back to Baltimore after a day of outdoor activities, accommodations can be found at the Lake Pointe Inn B&B. Rooms run $149 to $249 per night and breakfast is included.
