Family Fun at the Fair

You know it’s summer in Wisconsin when the pigs are racing and chocolate-covered bacon is being served on a stick.

Attending the Wisconsin State Fair is a family tradition for us. The annual event is kid-friendly, and believe it or not, educational. Along with inhaling endless food creations-on-a-stick, my young daughter delights in visiting the live animal exhibits, chemistry shows, and hands-on demos that make learning fun.

If you are looking for a family-friendly place to bond with your kids, then check out the following popular state fairs

Minnesota State Fair: Known as one of the largest and best-attended agricultural and educational entertainment events in the nation, the fair draws more than one million guests from around the Midwest. Highlights include: The State Fair Mall Parade, which features a rousing high school marching band competition. The daily parade follows a 14-block route and features floats, animals, specialty units and visiting royalty from festivals throughout the state. Another popular fair event takes place at the 3rd Lair Skate Park located on the fairgrounds. During the 10 days of the fair, daredevil athletes demonstrate their gravity-defying skills on skateboards, in-line skates, and BMX bikes.

Kansas State Fair: The annual Kansas State Fair is held annually beginning the Friday following Labor Day and lasts for 10 days at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas. The fair is the largest single event in the Kansas attracting more than 350,000 people from all 105 Kansas counties and several other states. The Fair offers more than 1,000 exhibits and draws approximately 30,000 agricultural competitors from around the state. You can also get married at the fair. Unique weddings have been a long standing tradition at the Kansas State Fair and couples, who don’t mind sharing their big day with pigs, horses and cows, sign up well in advance to wed in front of thousands of strangers. If you want to create wedding day memories to treasure forever, the fair is the place to get hitched.

Nebraska State Fair: The Nebraska State Fair is the state’s largest and most-anticipated family event of the summer. The festivities take place in August on the Nebraska Fairgrounds in Lincoln and features dozens of musical acts and other live entertainment as well as hundreds of agricultural exhibits, car races, bull riding, Monster truck shows, a demolition derby, daily parades, marching band competitions, comedy shows, a petting zoo and a huge midway filled with thrill rides that will delight everyone in your family.
