Family Fun in the Sun

Where are you planning to spend the upcoming Memorial Day weekend? For many families, the holiday allows them the chance to get a jumpstart on their summer tan while spending quality time with grandma, grandpa, cousins and other members of the extended clan. Fortunately, you don’t have to travel too far to have fun in the summer sun. The following popular vacation destinations offer family-friendly activities that don’t require draining your bank account to visit:

Florida: If you decide not to do Disney this season, then opt to entertain the kids in Tampa. The city is home to affordable attractions such as Busch Gardens, which features several major thrill rides, as well as an African animal park and a children’s area complete with a massive tree house. The Florida Aquarium is another inexpensive kid-friendly attraction. The watery wonderland is filled with more than 20,000 plants and sea creatures housed in fresh and saltwater environments. It also features a slew of interactive exhibits, including a million-gallon coral reef display.

North Carolina: The state borders the Atlantic Ocean’s white, sandy beaches and is a hot spot for families with kids of all ages. The coastal area is home to a bevy of beach towns including Wilmington, a quaint community that offers charming accommodations, top-rated restaurants and unique shopping experiences. While in North Carolina, consider exploring the Piedmont area, which stretches between the state’s eastern coast and western mountains. That’s where you will find world-class golf courses, pristine lakes, and other natural gems.

California: If chaotic L.A. is not your idea of an ideal family getaway, then head south to San Diego. Start by visiting the world-famous San Diego Zoo, which houses more than 4000 animals. From there head to San Diego Zoo Safari Park, where wild animals roam free among acres of land that mimic their native habitats in Africa and Asia. The city’s LEGOLAND is another must-visit attraction, especially if you have kids ages 2-12. The theme park boasts more than 50 interactive attractions and thrill rides. Finally, don’t miss out on the chance to explore Balboa Park. Dubbed the “Smithsonian of the West,” it is the largest urban cultural park in the United States.
