Face painting is a blast whether you are doing it as part of a birthday party, a visit to a renaissance faire or learning how to do it yourself for Halloween, costume parties and more. So with Halloween not that far away, let’s talk about some safety tips to keep in mind when it comes to face painting your kids, your self or both.
- You Need to Use the RIGHT Paints – Just because paint is non-toxic does not mean it is safe to use on your body parts. Be sure to invest in a brand of paint that is dedicated as safe for body or face painting. As most parents know, non-toxic, washable markers still take a while to come off the skin and are not recommended for face painting
- You Need to Use the RIGHT Glitter – just plain old fashioned metallic glitter that you buy in a craft store may not be safe for your skin or your child’s skin. You need to use glitter that is classified by the FDA as cosmetic sized and safe for use on skin
- Keep Health in Mind – If your child has very sensitive skin, the face painting materials may cause them to break out or cause severe itching – the more paint you use, the more likely they are to itch – be sure to wash their face before applying the face paint and test a small area of their skin for allergic reaction before using it on their face
- Use Clean Brushes and Sponges – Buy disposable so you can use fresh every time, especially if you are doing it yourself – it’s better to avoid bacterial infections
- Be prepared to entertain the child to keep them still during the face painting process – most face painters are really good story tellers or have some other form of entertainment available for the child to view – so be prepared
