Family Home Evening: Modern Day Prophets

This family home evening lesson is based loosely on the conference talk “Prophets—Pioneer and Modern Day” by Elder Earl C Tingey. The talk focuses on the many blessings that the church received while President Brigham Young and President Gordon B Hinckley were prophets of the church. This topic can be as broad or as narrow as you wish. You can easily include all of the prophets in the talk or focus specifically on President Gordon B Hinckley.

You can open the family home evening lesson by reading Doctrine and Covenants 1:38. You can talk about what that scripture means. It is important for your children to realize that the prophet is a mouthpiece for the Lord. It is important to follow his counsel because it is coming from Heavenly Father. You may want to share a few blessings that you have had because you chose to follow the counsel of the prophet. You may want to point out that “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” and the “For the Strength of Youth” pamphlet contain counsel specifically for the church at our time. Since the issuing of the family proclamation, the basic family unit has come under attack. It really did come forth at a time that we needed it.

If you have youth you may want to review a few of the standards in the “For the Strength of Youth” pamphlet. You can also share any experiences when you or a family member had the opportunity to speak to the prophet or hear him in person. You may also want to point out that we sustain the apostles as prophets, seers and revelators. You can end the lesson by bearing your testimony of the prophet and the restored church.

If you have younger children you may consider having them complete this activity about the prophet. You can also briefly share stories from several different prophets’ lives and have the children guess which prophet it was. You may also ask your children to share their favorite story of a prophet from the scriptures.

Be sure that you have an opening and closing hymn. You can play some family games outside for your activity. Be sure that you have refreshments as well.
