Working on projects as a family is not only fun, it is also a great way to teach kids how to work together. This is a neat project that you and your kids can put together and then hang up to show off.
What you will need:
- Craft wood
- Sand paper
- Saw tooth picture hanger
- Mug hooks (any small, self-drilling hooks)
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- Decorative items or stencils (optional)
What you will need to do:
1. When you’re looking for craft wood, check out the many shapes and styles. You can go with a plain, rectangular piece or find a cool shape. You can also pick up pre-cut wooden letters to spell out the word “keys” and glue them on with wood glue.
2. Sand the wood smooth on both sides and the edges. Wipe away any sanding dust.
3. Paint the wood. You can go with one solid color or measure and mark a border first then paint it with a contrasting color, making sure to paint the edges that color as well. It’s easier if you tape off the border, paint, remove tape, let it dry, and then paint the remainder.
4. Add any stenciling next. You might want to use your family’s last name or a monogram or randomly apply each family member’s name in small letters. Add other decorative elements, such as trim around the edges, if desired.
5. When dry, measure and mark the spot on the back for the picture frame hanger. Secure it in place.
6. Turn the wood over and begin measuring and marking the locations where each hook should be placed. Screw in the hooks.
7. Hang up your family key rack and enjoy your sense of fun and accomplishment.
Variations:
Make a spoon/utensil rack for the kitchen.
Create a custom rack for necklaces and bracelets.
Use a larger piece of wood and larger hooks to make a ball cap rack.
