It’s summer, and that means family campouts. We have been doing more campouts since the boys got involved in Boy Scouts. Little by little, we are adding to our gear. Until now, we’ve been in separate tents, but this deal is good enough that we’ll finally all be able to fit in one.
Camping with your children is one of the best memory-makers you will ever find. It’s not necessarily the actually camping, but the shared problem solving that goes along with it. I don’t think we have ever camped where SOMEthing didn’t go awry. It is working together for a solution that is the most memorable.
When we were young, my parents took us to Yosemite to camp. We had a big, ugly, but sturdy tent with flaps down the sides so that there were three bedrooms. It happened to be bear season (I think it’s always bear season at Yosemite!). On the first night, the bears ripped through tents on either side of us. They didn’t hurt anyone; they were just looking for food. I suppose my brothers probably smelled badly enough that they skipped ours. Seriously, though, they probably smelled that there were several people in the tent, so they left us alone.
These days, we use food containers that are bear-proof. I still like the security of having several people in a tent. On our last Boy Scout campout, I was the only female, so I slept alone, far removed from the men and boys. It wasn’t a very restful night as I heard every scratch, howl, and hoot the whole night through.
If you’re a wimp like me, or just looking for family togetherness, take a look at this 16×8 tent. It’s on sale for half price, and comes with free shipping. If you haven’t camped before, I recommend doing a trial run overnight in your backyard, or at a local state park first. It helps to work out the little kinks with a minimal amount of stress.
