Family Time: Sundae Bar

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Homeschooling requires a lot of time spent among family members. It can be easy to let go of family time that is simple and fun because so much time is already spent as a family. We need to create family traditions that are not solely about the homeschool aspect of our lives. Time spent laughing and being silly are important to the health of our families. I am thankful to belong to a church that encourages family time. On the fifth Sunday of a month we do not have a formal night service. Instead the time is set aside for families to spend time together. With crazy schedules and hectic weeks, it is nice to have time set aside to relax with family.

Today is the fifth Sunday of the month and this means we have the opportunity to plan a family event. I decided to keep it simple and incorporate something we call can agree on; ice cream. Tonight we are grilling burgers, relaxing, and finishing off the night with a sundae bar. This is a simple activity that everyone loves and is easy to set up.

On the menu tonight for our sundae bar is an array of sugar that should only happen on rare occasions. I have chocolate and vanilla ice cream to start out. The toppings include: gummi bears, crushed cookies, graham crackers, candy, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, marshmallow topping, bananas, and whipped cream. I plan to feature a smore sundae with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, crushed graham crackers, and marshmallow topping. I purchased plastic bowls and spoons to keep clean up easy. While we eat ice cream we will play some board games and possibly watch a movie.

There are so many ways to spend time with family that do not require travel or a lot of money. How do you spend time with your family?
