Family Travel: Dolls and Dolphins

If your holiday travel plans take you over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house in Wisconsin or Florida, then you might find the following information quite useful:

WISCONSIN

The Waukesha County Museum (located just west of Milwaukee) has something very special planned this holiday season for doll lovers of all ages. The museum is hosting more than 150 dolls representing ethnic groups from 65 different countries. The elaborate exhibit is dubbed: “Dolls of the World: Customs, Cultures and Celebrations,” and will be on hand through January 30, 2010.

The unique exhibit is a collaborative effort with The Toy Museum of New York. Visitors to the Waukesha County Museum will get to view dozens of dolls representing ethnic groups from a host of different countries, including England, Ireland, Germany, France, Japan, China, India and Africa.

In addition to showcasing the collectibles, the exhibit will explain why dolls are found across cultures, what role they play in childhood and how they help children model adult behaviors.

FLORIDA

If you want to see sharks, dolphins or killer whales during your winter vacation in Florida, prepare to dig a bit deeper. SeaWorld Orlando just announced that it is joining other area theme parks and raising its base ticket price to almost $80.

According to SeaWorld officials, a one-day ticket to SeaWorld will go up $4 to $78.95. The move brings SeaWorld’s base price to just 5 cents less than single-day, single-park tickets to Disney or Universal, both of which raised their prices over the summer.

The move is sure to upset out-of-towners, but Florida residents are not complaining. That’s because SeaWorld is reducing the price of its popular “Fun Cards.” The cards allow Florida residents to make repeated visits to the park with the purchase of a single-day ticket.

The price of in-state Fun Cards has been reduced by $5 to $69.95, but you can only benefit from the price slash if you purchase the cards online or at participating AAA offices. If you do not obtain the card prior to your visit, you will be forced to pay $74.95 at the gate.
