Family Travel: More Kid-Friendly Restaurants

I don’t know about you, but when our family hits the road for a family vacation there are only so many meals I can tolerate ordering from a hanging fluorescent menu. By day two I insist we eat at least one meal at a sit-down restaurant. However, I realize that this can add up (especially if you are not staying at a condo or resort with a kitchen that allows you to make your own meals).

In a previous blog I provided a list of some of our family’s favorite roadside pit stops. Here now are a few affordable additions that may help preserve your sanity, your pocketbook, and possibly your waistline while on the road:

Applebee’s

Every Wednesday the family-friendly restaurant offers 99-cent kids’ meals. The menu includes cheeseburgers, chicken fingers, hamburgers, macaroni and cheese, and grilled cheese sandwiches. The meals also come with side orders of broccoli, veggies and dip, applesauce, or fries. For less than a dollar—it’s hard to beat.

Good Company

Sunday is “Kids Day” at the restaurant. Everything on the kids’ menu is $1.25 all day. The menu includes, tacos, burgers, pasta, fish, shrimp, macaroni and cheese, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Your children must be 12 or younger to take advantage of the meal deals.

Grazies Italian Grill

Sunday is “Kids’ Pizza Day.” Your child can order a kid-sized, one-topping pizza (toppings include pepperoni, chicken, sausage, and a variety of veggies) and a drink for $2.50.

Perkins

“When in doubt, go to Perkins.” That’s one of my mom’s travel mottos. If you are on the road on a Tuesday, Perkins is the place to be. Kids eat free on Tuesday after 5 p.m. with the purchase of an adult entrée. Your child can choose from grilled cheese, chicken tenders, macaroni and cheese, pizza, pancakes or French toast.

Ponderosa Steakhouse

Tuesday is also “Kids’ Day” at Ponderosa where up to two children under the age of 12 can dine for free with a paid adult meal after 4 p.m. The buffet menu changes daily and there are enough options to feed even the pickiest pint-size diner.

What’s your family’s favorite pit stop?
