Family Travel: Something for Mom

While dads do their fair share of loading the van, schlepping luggage and strollers in and out of the hotel and helping to round up the troops, in most families it’s mom who takes on the larger tasks of planning, packing and executing the family vacation.

At the same time it is very rare for a mom to plan any part of a family vacation around her own interests. Generally the trip to the amusement park, waterpark, campsite, etc. is designed around the children’s interests. (Yes, most moms would say that they are happy just getting to spend time with their families and there’s nothing better than seeing their children have a good time, yada, yada, but work with me here.)

If you are a mom in the midst of planning your family’s summer road trip consider earmarking some time to indulge in one of your favorite activities.

The following package deals were designed with moms in mind and include accommodations plus access to female-friendly activities such as pampering, and fine dining.

FLORIDA

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau’s is targeting overworked women for their latest promotion—Spa Chic Stays. The package combines customized spa treatments with an overnight stay at a participating local hotel. Rates start at $249 for one night in a two-room, two-bath suite at the Embassy Suites Deerfield Beach Resort and Spa, complimentary breakfast and a manager’s reception in the afternoon. The package also features a Spa Chic treatment for one person, which consists of a 50-minute Swedish massage, a 25-minute Pevonia aromatherapy bath, and a designer Spa950 Bling custom tee and a Spa950 visor. Or you could choose a Spa Chic Stay at another participating hotel such as the Diplomat Golf Resort and Spa for $370 per room per night or spend a bit more and stay at the ultra-luxe Harbor Beach Marriott. The offer expires September 30, 2008.

WISCONSIN

If you really have the guts you can ditch your family all together, grab your best friend and head to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin to take advantage of the Girlfriends Summer Celebration package. The deal includes one night in a two-bedroom suite at the Osthoff Resort, champagne and chocolate upon arrival, breakfast daily, and $250 worth of spa services at Aspira Spa. The resort boasts a gym, pools (two outdoor and one indoor with two whirlpools), tennis courts, an arcade, top-rated on-site restaurants, and 500 feet of sandy beach. You can choose from a variety of water-based activities that range from $9 for 30 minutes on a hydro bike to $330 (per rental) for eight hours on a 12-person, 24-foot pontoon boat. Rates start at $494 per room per night. The offer is good through September 30, 2008.
