Today our family headed out to the front yard armed with brooms, rakes, and hedge trimmers. And no, yard work isn’t as fun as the amusement park, but that’s okay. I want the boys to participate in keeping up their house and yard. I want them to appreciate some of the work that goes into keeping a place together. And I want them to learn how to do that work. And besides, working together as a family can be fun.
And along with sprucing up our yard, we did have some unexpected fun. We edged around the sidewalk which left us with huge amount of clumps of dirt and grass. The younger boys got to take the clumps, break them up and throw them into another area of the yard. They thought that was great fun. Did they throw a few at each other? Well, yes, but no harm was done. And we discovered several kinds of spiders, worms, and new bugs under our wood pile. Not great fun for me, but for other members of my family this was way cool.
We also swept up clippings and the boys got to dump those over the fence into the mulch pile. For some reason, it’s funny to dump things over a fence. Our oldest got to use the electric hedge trimmers for the first time. He did a great job, except for cutting through the extension cord. My husband assured him that everyone does that at least once.
We don’t use our front yard much. But we talked about ways to decorate it for Halloween, and what we wanted to do for Christmas, too. The boys don’t remember, but they helped plant all the flower bulbs, and lots of the perennials when they were little. Today wasn’t exciting. We didn’t take pictures. It wasn’t even written on the calendar. But it was a nice fall day with the family, taking care of our yard.
