FamilySearch Has a Video Contest

webcam Were you able to use the information in the 1940 United States Census to find your ancestors? Now is your chance to express your gratitude to the indexers who helped make that possible. FamilySearch is having a video contest. Five people will win a $25.00 Visa gift card.

FamilySearch is the popular genealogy website that is run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Thousands of volunteers helped index the names that were in the 1940 United States Census data so that those names would be searchable online. This huge task is now complete, thanks to the efforts of the indexers and arbitrators who helped.

Would you like to say “Thank you” to the indexers who made it possible for you to find your ancestors in the census? FamilySearch has an excellent way for you to do that. They are having a video contest. Create a video that highlights an ancestor who you have found and express your gratitude to the indexers who made it possible. Let the volunteers know that their efforts were appreciated. Doing this will make both you and the indexers feel good. It will also give you the chance to win a $25.00 Visa gift card.

Your video must be one minute in length (or less). FamilySearch would like you to submit your video in your native language. You must be at least 13 years of age at the start of this contest in order to enter. Parental permission is required for anyone who is age 13 through 17 to enter this contest. (There are forms that a parent must fill out to indicate permission has been granted). Your video cannot contain any logos, trademarks, or brand names.

Video submissions will be accepted starting October 8, 2012. The submission deadline is November 5, 2012. The winning videos will be posted on the FamilySearch indexing Facebook page. Five of those winners will each receive a $25.00 Visa gift card.

To find out who was selected as a winner, you need to visit either the FamilySearch blog, the FamilySearch Facebook page, or the FamilySearch Indexing Facebook page on Friday, November 9, 2012. The winning videos will also be highlighted in the FamilySearch Indexing December newsletter.

It would be difficult, if not impossible, for you to go and meet each of the people who helped to index the 1940 United States Census in order to thank them for their efforts in person. Instead, you can make a video that expresses your gratitude. The indexers can watch your video and they will know that you appreciate their efforts.
