What do Nicole Kidman and Martha Stewart have in common? I asked myself the same question when I saw that both ladies were making headlines this week. Besides the fact that both are very wealthy and are often fodder for the tabloids, my answer is that they are both (currently) blondes–hence my blog title. So, how are they showing their true colors? Read on:
Nicole Kidman
The actress is leaving Hollywood behind as she undertakes her latest role in life. This week Kidman is touring Kosovo as a United Nations goodwill ambassador to the tense province.
“I’m here … to learn so that I can help your country at this crucial, crucial time for the future,” Kidman said to area residents after arriving in the area a few days ago. “I am here to meet people, hear their stories and educate myself, and I suppose be a voice for you if you need it.”
The actress was named goodwill ambassador of the U.N. Development Fund for Women, or UNIFEM, in January and the tour of Kosovo is her first visit in that role.
I have always been a fan of Kidman’s and her I think her visit to Kosovo is rather daring, especially since ethnic Albanians and Serbs are negotiating the status of the region. But, despite the sensitivity of the times, Kidman told reporters she was obligated to her mission and refused to stay away.
Martha Stewart
The domestic diva has just done “a good thing” herself. According to news reports, Stewart just pledged to donate $1 million to the hospital where doctors stitched up her hand last December.
The 65-year-old lifestyle guru visited the hospital’s emergency department after slicing her hand while carving a turkey in her home about four miles away. If you are a fan of her show you’ll remember her talking about it and trying to use it as a way to get David Letterman to appear on her show (he had cut his hand around the same time). It didn’t work.
But, back to Stewart’s pledge–it comes with a catch (ah, Martha’s true colors?)-other donors must give $2 million by the end of the year before the Stewart money kicks in. The donations would help the hospital nearly reach its $25 million fundraising goal for a new emergency department. So far, more than $21 million has been pledged and a fundraising gala is scheduled for next week.
