Fashion File: Skinny Jeans—Do You Dare Wear Them?

First, it was the skinny jeans. Worn by Hollywood’s fashionistas I considered them a fashion comeback of sorts since I owned a few pair myself—in high school. Now, forget about the skinny jeans and make way for the super-skinny jeans–worn by super-skinny stars, including Kate Moss and Paris Hilton.

Let’s examine this latest trend in denim. According to fashion magazines, if you are going to pull of the super-skinny look you should do so in super-dark denim. Personally, I don’t think super skinny jeans are flattering even on the skinniest person (my humble opinion). I mean are they skinny jeans or are they tights. Either way, I have yet to see anyone not look like they are wearing sausage casing—Kate Moss included. I say we all simply ban the super-skinny trend—-in jeans and in bodies. After all, I thought the whole idea behind the jeans concept was to accentuate comfort. How can you be comfortable when your pants are constricting your blood flow?

Before I get an outpouring of negative comments–listen, you can wear whatever makes you happy. While there are some of us who prefer to eliminate skinny jeans from our closets (and our vocabulary), many fashion consultants are insisting that “anyone can wear them — honest!” Fashion magazine editors say contrary to popular opinion, the look is not just for the waifish and slim of hip/thigh/butt. Rather, they say, within the skinny jeans world, there are a variety of cuts, lengths, and widths of the slim styles that can flatter any body type.

Want to jump on the skinny jean bandwagon? Here are some tips from fashion experts to help you find the right pair:

· If you are more petite experts recommend wearing a cropped style, which you could pair with a hot pair of heels.

· If you are fuller-figured, try a pair that scrunches around your ankle, which creates the same slimming illusion as a pair of bootcut jeans.

· If you want to make your legs look longer, experts say try a long pair of jeans pulled down over super- high heels.

Another tip: I’m told when wearing skinny jeans it is all about proportion–so consider wearing a longer, looser top with your tighter jeans to balance yourself out.
