Fashion Forward: Life Saving Uniforms

It’s revolutionary fashion that could save your life…

Unless you are in the military or are a member of the outdoor sporting community then you probably have never heard of BlackHawk brand clothing. However, if you or a loved one is placed in a highly hostile environment–trust me–there is nothing you would rather be wearing.

BlackHawk’s clothing collection is typically used by outdoor sporting enthusiasts, law enforcement officers and military personnel, but the company is hoping to expand and make their products accessible to more of the general public.

The company recently made headlines when it unveiled its Warrior Wear uniform that features eight built-in tourniquets — two in each sleeve and each pant leg. A tourniquet fashioned from straps that look like those on backpacks are sewn into the clothing, and the straps are concealed beneath a fabric fastener. The life saving uniform is expected to retail for less than $200.

The idea was developed by a U.S. Army surgeon who was stationed in the Middle East and was forced to watch a colleague bleed to death from a fatal wound sustained in a rocket-propelled grenade attack on a convoy.

Military officials who agree that having readily accessible tourniquets is important are pushing for the government to strike a deal with BlackHawk so service men and women can have access to the new uniforms. Likewise, if you or a loved one is a solider or police officer then you likely want them in Warrior Wear too, especially since studies show 60 percent of injuries sustained in military and law enforcement conflicts today are to the extremities, and 10 percent of deaths are from injuries where blood loss was uncontrollable.

Granted these products are ones you can run out to the mall to purchase and they might not be as fashionable as super skinny jeans and musical shirts, but when a few scraps of material can be sewn into a product that could potentially save a life it bears mentioning.
