It’s not everyday that you see the name Liz Claiborne prominently displayed at Best Buy. But, in a move that has fashion combining with function, the Liz Claiborne brand is teaming up with the electronics outlet store to introduce a new line of consumer electronic accessories.
According to the company, the new collection is tailored for the “stylish woman on the go.” It includes an extensive line of laptop bags and sleeves, business totes, cellphone cases, MP3 cases and camera cases made from a variety of fabrics, including luxe leathers, and materials with metallic and patent finishes.
The new line comes at a time when studies show more high-tech gadgets are being manufactured with women in mind. The latest trend puts to rest the misconception that women don’t like technology.
In fact, a recent survey asked women to choose between a piece of jewelry and an electronic gift, and more than half of them chose the electronic gadget. I’m serious! The survey showed 64% of female respondents said they would pick a digital camera over half-carat diamond earrings. Another report revealed that women now spend more than men on consumer electronics.
According to consumer experts, female consumers are looking for technology that will make their lives easier—items they can just be pulled out of the box and used without reading through mountains of instruction manuals.
To that end manufacturers have created cameras that print on a docking station and computers that are “plug and play.” One company has gone as far as developing a laptop that accommodates longer fingernails. In addition, today’s flat screen TVs come in more female-friendly sizes. There are also devices to hide wires, and all-in-one systems to reduce clutter.
Consumer electronic manufacturers stress that when it comes to marketing new high tech gadgets it’s not about alienating men but about including women.
