Do remember this line from middle school: “Here’s a dollar go out and buy some fashion sense.” Some guy I went to school with would say that to all the girls. (It’s no wonder why he made it through high school without a date.) That was years ago and I am still no fashionista, but I do like to think that I know what looks good on me.
What about you? Can you tell the difference between fabulous and frumpy? Are you constantly trying to keep up with trends no matter how they look on you? It’s great to be fashionable, but sometimes it’s easy to stray into the fashion disaster zone (I would know—I’ve been there.)
These days my style is more classy comfort than totally trendy. It helps that I follow the advice of some fashion experts. The following are some of the tips that have helped me over the years.
Dress Your Age
Knowing what works for someone your age can take a lot of the guesswork out of shopping. I’m not suggesting you bag it (literally) once you’re out of your 20s. I’m merely suggesting that middle-aged women should avoid dressing like teens, regardless of how great they look for their age. Women in their 20s & 30s are young enough to pull off almost any trend as long as they’re comfortable in it. Once you’ve reach your 40s & 50s you may want to stick with the classics that will last you season after season. Likewise for women in their 60s (and up, it’s a good idea to keep your look polished with classics, and leave the bold colors and fabrics to your accessories.
Accessories
Speaking of accessories… a woman of any age can tell you that what you add to your outfit can make or break your overall look. Accessories can turn a drab pantsuit into something fashionable and an ordinary t-shirt into a dazzling topper. My greatest accessory—shoes. Especially, heels (I’m vertically challenged.) If you want to add height, try wedges. On the flip side, if you want to make your ankles look lean, avoid ankle straps, as they will cut you off in the wrong place. Also, be careful with boots. You never want to wear a boot that cuts you off mid-calf.
Other accessories, such as handbags, should coordinate with your height and size. For example, if you’re petite, an oversized tote may overwhelm you. Instead, try a trendy clutch purse. On the other hand, if you are taller or curvy, a larger tote can help balance you out.
