What are you wearing to your next holiday party? I’ve got another Christmas shindig coming up on Saturday night. It’s just an annual get together with a group of friends I used to work with. There’ll be lots of kids and lots of food, which means I don’t need to break out my black strapless sequined number and mile-high Manolos (wait, I don’t even own Manolos).
Regardless of whether you are attending an office party, family get-together, neighborhood potluck or a black tie affair this holiday season, you’ve probably spent some time wondering what you’re going to wear.
Different occasions require different outfits and you need to look appropriate for the type of party you are attending. I would never consider wearing a strapless anything to a family get-together when I spend half the time chasing after kids and the other half scraping splattered food out of my hair.
So, what should you wear to informal family gatherings? Here are a few ideas:
Personally, I think comfort, but you don’t want to lack style either. You want to be cozy while you watch your loved ones open their gifts, which is why a soft turtleneck sweater could come in handy. A comfort-fit soft sweater allows you the flexibility to play with the kids and not look like you just rolled out of bed. I would pair it with a pair of khakis, corduroys or a better pair of jeans (spare your Aunt Polly and leave the frayed and torn jeans at home). If you are like my sister-in-law who prefers to wear something more feminine you could consider treating yourself to a new sweater dress in a winter ecru, so it’s festive yet functional and fashionable.
Office parties require a bit more fashion effort. I was lucky because our office party was typically held on a Friday night so I would wear whatever outfit I had on and head straight to the party right when my shift was over. Back then I would simply make use of accessories to go from day to night. Pants are easy to accessorize. You could wear a camisole under a sweater during the day and for night you could ditch the sweater and pair the cami with a fitted shinny jacket. Pair that with some sparkly bracelets, a necklace, and some strappy sandals and you’re good to go.
