I don’t have long, luxurious locks like Denise Richards or Jennifer Lopez. And to be completely honest, I’m glad I don’t because I stink when it comes to maintaining the perfect do. I simply don’t have time (see: don’t want to make time) to spend hours in the bathroom washing, rinsing, repeating, blow drying, crimping, curling, brushing or braiding hair. (It’s all I can do to maintain my short, low-maintenance do.) That being said I am still very grateful that I have been blessed with a full head of hair.
Hair loss is a devastating dilemma for a millions of women in this country. No matter what the style—short, long, curly, straight, blonde, black, or buzzed—in today’s society hair often defines your look. So you can imagine the effects hair loss has on a person. My next-door neighbor will tell you that the effects are not only physical, but emotional as well. She recently underwent a hair transplant (yes, the same treatment typically done on men) and is now getting used to her new locks.
According to my neighbor’s doctor, he has seen a 70% jump in female transplant patients since last year. But, that’s not the most startling bit of news he shared with my neighbor. According to the doctor, not only are women coming in for hair transplants (most of his patients undergo the procedure as a result of a medical condition) many are booking appointments for elective eyebrow restoration.
Basically, women who have over plucked their brows in an effort to look fashionable are paying hundreds of dollars to have hair implanted back above their eyes. Are you as shocked as I am? Look, I realize women don’t want to be seen with bare brows, but when I remove too much from my eyebrows I simply get a pencil and fill in the spaces. (Granted, it doesn’t look as good as the real thing, but it suffices until the hair grows back.)
Women who opt for the brow transplants want a more natural look. (At least that’s what my neighbor’s doctor maintains.) So how is it done? Apparently, the procedure is similar to a typical head hair transplant. Doctors take a strip of hair, usually from the back of the head and remove the follicles under a microscope. They cut little grafts of containing one, two, three sometimes even four hairs, and then place each graft into the recipient skin. (No wonder why the procedure costs so much.)
