Fashionably Injured

How this for irony: just a few days ago actress Lindsay Lohan was rushed to the hospital after slipping and falling at a New York City Fashion Week party. According to news reports, the 20-year-old fractured her wrist in two places. In the days following her accident it has been reported that she has been shopping in Beverly Hills (apparently she is not one to let a broken bone interfere with her favorite pastime) with a–here comes the ironic part–a fashionable wrist strap.

GASP (that’s my mock surprise), a stylish cast, why should we be surprised? I saw a picture of her on the Internet today and it seemed more like she was hiding the injury under high fashion duds, than actually donning a couture cast. I will save my judgment until after I scrutinize more pictures of her. However, if it is indeed true that her cast is glamorous in its own right it wouldn’t be the first time a celebrity made the most of what some would consider a fashion flaw. I once read that it is hard to keep a fashionista down. I suppose injured or not looking good is key.

Lohan may want to take a page from actress Brooke Burke who managed to turn her neck brace into a real sparkler. Last year, the actress broke her neck diving into a pool and had to don a brace for a few weeks. Instead of whining about her situation Burke broke out her bedazzler and affixed jewels to her brace. Then there is singer Christina Aguilera, who in July 2005 sliced two tendons in her wrist, yet still managed to be the height of style at the Dior Couture show in Paris. No sterile white cast for this songbird; rather Aguilera wrapped her cast in black chiffon to compliment her sleek dress.

Of course, none of the aforementioned stars holds a candle to the ultimate fashion icon, Madonna. When the Material Girl injured her shoulder and broke several ribs during a horseback riding accident at her English country estate late last year she dealt with her unstylish injuries by revamping her entire wardrobe. First, she reportedly had a special black cast made for her, then she held it in place with a fashionable black sling. Finally, the songsters spent weeks in all-black outfits, which coordinated perfectly with her sling and cast. Which just goes to show that while the injury may be painful, most celebs try their best to avoid suffering further injury by showing up on a worst dressed list while recovering.
