Fasting is a wonderful experience if done correctly. However, it takes preparation, and a positive mindset to make fasting a truly spiritual experience. I fasted for the first time when I was three years old. In defense of my parents, they had fixed my breakfast before we went to church. I refused to eat when I realized that they weren’t eating because they were fasting. I wanted to fast as well. I made it until I was in Sunbeams. I remember breaking down in tears, and my mom taking me home to feed me. My parents knew that I was still too little to fast. I was also too young to truly understand the real meaning behind fasting.
In “The Law of the Fast,” Elder Joseph B Wirthlin explains, “In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, members are encouraged to fast whenever their faith needs special fortification and to fast regularly once each month on fast day. On that day, we go without eating or drinking for two consecutive meals, commune with our Heavenly Father, and contribute a fast offering to help the poor. The offering should be at least equal to the value of the food that would have been eaten. Typically, the first Sunday of each month is designated as fast Sunday. On that day, members who are physically able are encouraged to fast, pray, bear witness to the truthfulness of the gospel, and pay a generous fast offering.”
As I’ve grown older my understanding of fasting, and the spiritual growth that can occur during fasting has grown. It is important to fast with a purpose in mind. You can be fasting for an answer to a question, or for a family member who is going through a difficult time. You should also begin and end a fast with a prayer. If you are searching for an answer to a question, or for guidance, it is helpful to set some time aside so that you can read and study the scriptures. Attending the temple the day before fasting or while you are fasting can also help to make your fast more meaningful.
Elder Wirthlin went on to say, “Fasting in the proper spirit and in the Lord’s way will energize us spiritually, strengthen our self-discipline, fill our homes with peace, lighten our hearts with joy, fortify us against temptation, prepare us for times of adversity, and open the windows of heaven.”
I have felt the blessings that come with fasting. My prayers have been answered and I’ve been able to feel Heavenly Father’s love for me. Fasting truly does bring us closer to the Lord.
