It’s that special time of year again when dads look forward to all the unique and wonderful gifts that they will receive. Everything from ties to power tools is on the menu. One of the best gifts I ever received was a 12-string guitar. I used to joke with my wife all the time about getting one for my anniversary present. My wife and son went in on this together and purchased it online.
I tried to think back to what I used to give my dad for Father’s Day. Nothing really stands out in my mind. Today we mostly just send our dads cards and give them a phone call. So, I guess we are mostly giving them our time. A card seems like such a small thing, but it can mean a great deal to a dad when there has not been much contact between a father and his children. A person’s handwriting is such a personal way to express their thoughts to a loved one.
A phone call gives your dad a voice to hear and may even help to soothe loneliness. It also gives them information about your family that they can brag about to their friends. Photographs are also a great bragging tool for parents and grandparents and mean a great deal to them. My grandmother was buried with a picture frame entitled “Grandma’s Gang” with pictures of her three grandkids. We were loved and adored by our grandmother.
Other gifts you could consider might be a scrapbook with letters and photographs of special memories of your father. You could also include a videotape presentation of something like “This is Your Life.” Some people who could not travel might be able to offer special memories about your dad that could be a great keepsake.
Whatever gift, or mode of expression you choose it is just great that you are setting aside a day to honor your dad.
