Father’s Day is rapidly approaching. Poor dads. They often seem to get left out. The kids make cute crafts or write poems for Mother’s Day in school, but not for Father’s Day. It’s a shame really. Dads are important. And good fathers should be celebrated. Everyone likes to know they are appreciated.
Shopping for presents for my husband is hard sometimes. He wants more big ticket items like motorcycles, trips, or new computers. And while I am thrilled with mango scented shampoo and a bar of really great chocolate, it’s hard to find anything that would thrill him for such a small price tag. The stores don’t help. From their displays and cards it seems like all fathers ever do is fish, drink beer, mow the lawn, golf, and lay around in hammocks. And wear ties, of course. I don’t see gifts for father’s who teach their kids things, or go camping with them, drive them to school, go over their algebra homework, or read to them at night.
I like to buy fun presents for my husband for Father’s Day – presents he can share with the boys. One year we got him a huge remote control 4-wheel truck. All the kids had fun driving it and making up courses for the truck. I also like to do computer games they all will enjoy playing together. Other fun ideas are Frisbees for Frisbee golf, fishing poles, bocce balls, or croquet sets. I also like to give him something just for him, a special meal, a favorite cake, and maybe some time off for something fun.
I also make sure that I let my husband know what a good father he is, and how much I appreciate that. And I encourage the boys to do the same. It’s not a new motorcycle, but I think it’s even more important.
