This is part three in a series of Father’s Day ideas from the heart – creative, fun, inexpensive, and most of all, memorable Father’s Day gifts you can put together with your children this year.
Gift Baskets
Gift baskets are an easy and fun way to get kids involved in picking out a gift for Dad. They can be as inexpensive and affordable as you want to make them. Gather the kids and discuss together what Dad’s interests and passions are. Decide on a “theme” for your gift basket. Here are some possible themes:
- Tools –
Protective goggles, tape measure, new hammer, nails, etc - Cooking –
An apron (decorated by the kids would be great!), wooden spoons, spices, new recipe books, etc - Grilling –
New BBQ recipes, marinade, basting brush, grill tools, etc. - Coffee –
A new mug (decorated by the kids), travel mug, bean grinder, whole gourmet beans, flavored creamer, etc. - Sports (golfing, basketball, etc)-
Golf tees, new golf shirt, a gift certificate for lessons or 18 holes nearby, new balls - Reading –
A mini-book light, homemade or kid-designed bookmarks, a few new books - Gardening –
A kneeling pad, new gardening gloves, seeds, sprinkler, gardening books, etc. - Computers –
Computing books, new mouse, keyboard cleaner, monitor cleaner, glare screen, etc. - Movies –
Gift certificates for a video rental store, microwave popcorn, a comfy new lap blanket - Boating –
Sunscreen, sunglasses, maps and a fun snorkel or flippers - Camping –
Sunscreen, bug spray, tent spikes, hot dog skewers, etc
It’s usually best to buy the items to fill your basket and then find a basket that will match the size needed to hold the items. The Dollar Store is a great place to head with kids to fill the basket. Your kids will be great at locating items that fit the suggested them but feel free to throw out some suggestions. In the end, the items should be things your children hand-picked so they feel like they are really part of the gift-making process. You can also find nice baskets, containers or bags to add your contents to at the Dollar Store. It is also fun to think outside the box and pick containers that match the theme of your gift (a wheelbarrow for the gardener, a cooler for the camper, etc).
There you have it! A fun, one-of-a-kind gift that is creative and simple and can be modified to fit any budget. It is a nice middle of the road for those wanting to give Dad something more original and from the heart but with no desire to do things that are creafy or “homemade”. And the kids will really have a ball thinking in “theme”!
