One of the absolute joys of working from a home-based business is the flexibility and control one can have over the wardrobe and clothes that are worn for work. When you work in an office or a more traditional work setting, you may be required to adhere to a dress code, or wear a uniform, and these aren’t always the most comfortable or flattering clothes styles. I get quite excited on days when I can spend the entire day working from my home office and get to wear my favorite, most inspiring clothes…
Believe it or not, my favorite clothes for working at home aren’t my sweats or pajamas—I have a pair of soft, black, wide-leg pants and a soft, cotton, black v-neck sweater. I know there is something about this ensemble that not only feels comfortable for sitting and writing in, but also fits my long-held image of what a “writer” looks like while she’s working. If I’m feeling really sassy, I’ll tie back my hair with an artsy scarf. Then, I really feel like a functioning writer from a novel or movie.
The clothes for working tend to be one of the topics I’m most-asked about from other people. Next to how much money one can make from a home business and whether or not I’m actually working, people tend to project their own fantasies about not having to “dress up” if one works from home. It is true, I don’t usually have to dress up unless I am going to a meeting or other event—but that doesn’t mean I work best in my old sweats. How about you? Do you have a uniform or favorite clothes that help you to feel productive and efficient? Do you take advantage of not having to dress up to wear your comfy pajamas? How is your home business wardrobe different from when you worked a more traditional job?
