I’m feeling nostalgic today.
My oldest recently moved downstairs to the guest room. In the process of moving his things, a lot of his old toys got boxed up. Some we saved and some got boxed to give away. He’s thirteen so he doesn’t need his talking Arthur, his stuffed Pooh Bears or many other toys. Boxing up the toys made me sad, and made me miss the little boy who carried that Pooh bear everywhere.
A week later my sister-in-law forwarded an email to me called “If You Were a Little Girl in the 70’s”. It showed all kinds of pictures of things from that era. Toys, fashions, TV shows, magazines. And even though most of my little girlhood was in the 60’s it still made me smile to see those things. Gauchos! And Strawberry Shortcake! And Leif Garrett on the cover of Teen Beat. And I started to think about all the things that I played with and loved that I don’t have a record of – my Peanuts art designer, a self-inking smiley face stamp, a shelf of miniature animals, and an entire complete collection of Star Wars bubblegum cards.
We always bring out the cameras for special occasions. And we have video tape of things like Christmas morning and school plays. But what we don’t have are just the every day pictures. Pictures of boys building with legos, reading a Dragons of Deltora or Puppy Patrol book, arranging their panda collection, drawing a picture, playing Club Penguin on the computer, or playing Super Mario Crossing on the GameCube. And while we have pictures of special family meals we don’t have ones of the average dinners and breakfasts.
So all this nostalgia is a good thing – it’s made me realize that I need to get out the camera more often and take pictures of those special toys and ordinary days.
