Did you know that February is National Bird feeding Month? Celebrate our feathered creatures during this cold month by offering them a scrumptious treat. Gather your children, your neighbors children or whoever else wants to participate in this activity that is fun and helpful to these amazing creatures of the earth.
Find some empty paper towel rolls or toilet paper rolls. If you do not have enough of these items enlist your family and friends to save them up for you before you start this project. Empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls come in handy for a variety of arts and crafts projects so be sure not to throw them away!
Have the children sit at the table so that the mess is contained to this one area. All great projects involve a little mess, but if you can keep it contained to one area clean up is easier.
You will also need smooth peanut butter, bird seed and some yarn so prepare ahead of time. Use a hole puncher and punch holes on both sides of the paper roll at the top. Pour the bird seed in an empty baking pan. Have the children spread peanut butter all over the empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls. A spoon is a good utensil for them to use for this. Be sure to instruct them to smooth it out all the way around the roll. You can then have them roll their paper towel or toilet paper roll in the baking pan through the bird seed covering the entire roll. String yarn through both holes at the top of the rolls making sure that the string is long enough to hang from a tree or a hook outside.
The kids will have a great time with this project and watching the birds come to the feeder afterwards to enjoy their snack!
