Feeding Tips

Hard to believe it’s been a year. In December 2005, I posted my first Pets blog at Families.com! In that time, I’ve learned a lot. A whole lot. Sometimes, there are bits and pieces I’ve come across that I thought were important, but maybe not enough to make a full article about. These quick feeding tips for dogs and cats come from that pile of important bits and pieces.

Quick feeding tips for dogs:

  • Fresh water should be available at all times!
  • Adult dogs can be fed once or twice daily.
  • Puppies can be fed two or three smaller meals every day.
  • Adult dogs need about ten percent of all their calories from protein.
  • Vegetarian diets are okay for many dogs, as long as they get enough protein, vitamins, and minerals.

Quick feeding tips for cats:

  • Fresh water should be available at all times! Your cat may prefer moving water to standing water; water fountain style bowls are available at many pet stores.
  • The average adult cat needs about 275 calories per day.
  • Nursing, ill, or injured cats may need more calories daily.
  • A cat’s natural feeding cycle includes many small meals per day. Your cat may prefer to graze from available food, rather than eat a few large meals.
  • Vegetarian diets can lead to deficiencies for your cat. Fiber can be useful in a diet, but it shouldn’t be the only food.

Please read the ingredient labels when choosing a food for your pets. Look for healthy sources of protein and fiber near the top of the list. Ask your veterinarian, local shelter, or breed association for recommendations if you aren’t sure what food to choose.

Want to help your overweight pet slim down? Give smaller portions at regular feeding times. Avoid table scraps and soft treats — soft treats are usually higher in fat than crunchy treats.
