Feline “Purr”sonalities

Cats are just as diverse in their temperaments and persuasions as those of us who can only rely on two legs to walk upon. Character traits may not be visible to those visiting a home as they may be inhibited by good manners, breeding etc. Once a cat calls your house its home, however, it’s another matter entirely.

I have five precious felines (or do they have me)? Each has its own agenda and attitude about how the house is run, who is and should be running it, recess, sleep and feeding time. I have one cat who only eats at night in the light of the full moon and another that won’t eat with the others unless at least four feet away from them in an elevated position. One doesn’t like dry food; another doesn’t like wet food and covers the dish with her paws to tell me so should I dare forget! One cat prefers chicken, the other fish.

At feeding time, I am reminded of a story about an aunt of mine. Unable to deal with the multiple requests of her sons for one, two, three and four minute eggs respectively, she opened an egg and poured it over one of their heads, with explicit instructions to make the d—m eggs anyway they liked!

One cat, (Spats by name), collects my makeup sponges and hides them under my bed among other places. How he opens the glass lid that encloses them is a mystery not even Hercule Poirot could solve! I have another cat named Chloey who collects my cotton swabs. One day, a while back, my treadmill began to make a strange sound. I looked down and saw several swabs crushed inside the mechanism. My Mitzu steals and hoards socks. (I have heard of foot fetishes, but this is ridiculous!) I find them everywhere around the house, that is, when I can find them. I am still missing my favorite pair of ski socks and she will not tell me where they are even though I know she knows!

The madness of living with animals is unique and wonderful. Despite everything, I wouldn’t want it any other way. My cats give me so much more than I give them. I just wish Mitzu would give me my socks back!

Do YOU have a cat with an interesting habit or character trait? Please share.
