Early last evening, my eldest son and I came home from his chess club and found that we couldn’t get down the driveway. I parked at the top and saw splayed across our path several trees that my husband had felled. We made our way around and over the lawn toward the house, only to be met with another felled tree blocking our path. Our course my son thought this was great fun, climbing over a tree on the ground.
Fortunately, the three holly trees near the house were still in tact. So were a few other strong, healthy trees, so the yard is not completely barren.
That day, my husband felled a total of 12 trees in the front yard. This is in preparation for winter. The trees were tall, thin and mostly dead. I’m not a big fan of getting rid of trees, but there was a real safety issue. Still, the newly exposed lawn was quite shocking after having lived with the front yard looking more like a forest.
Another shocking bit is seeing all of the stumps in the yard, which I have to keep reminding myself not to complain about. I know that he will get to them soon. Today, he is concentration on sawing the trees into manageable logs that will later be split into firewood.
With the nice weather over the last two days, everyone in the neighborhood has been catching up with yard work. I’ve been blowing leaves and raking leaves and escorting them away from the lawn and into the woods. The little kids have been catching and releasing earthworms that get uncovered as I work. This is a great activity to keep them occupied. Yesterday, they gathered the worms into cups, and later we talked about them. After a night spent outside on the front porch, this morning, the worms were freed to go back to their “dirt homes.”
Are you all done with lawn and garden work for the year, or are you just getting started?
