This past week, we had a good and simple family home evening lesson. This time, we used the Friend magazine for our story. I used this one. The beauty of this little story is that it fit my kids perfectly because it was about an older sister and a younger brother. So, while I was reading it to them, I substituted my kids names for the kids in the story. They always love it when I do that, and I have found that it helps them pay more attention too!
The story was all about an older sister who was bored sitting through her younger brother’s little league game. The moral of the story was about showing support for our family members. Recently, my little boy has had to sit through a lot of his older sister’s dance lessons. Some days he would cry because he did not want to go. As the younger brother, he has had to endure many events like this. Last week, was a perfect week to give this lesson because she had her Kindergarten graduation program.
I talked about how important it is to show support for others. They did not understand exactly what support was, so we talked a little be about what being supportive meant. Then, I asked them how they thought they could be supportive for their cousin’s piano recital that was also that week. They gave some great answers like being quiet and listening, and telling them they did a good job. We also decided that they could each make a card for each of their cousins to give to them after the recital. They loved that! Then, of course, we ended with a game of duck, duck, goose! It was a fun night.
The friend is a great tool for last minute family home evenings, especially if you have a young family like mine with a short attention span!
