Fifth Grade Math Curriculum

Fifth grade math curriculum builds upon what was learned in previous years. Your child may already know many of these concepts, but they must be practiced at a higher difficulty level. Here are the math concepts that your fifth grader should learn.

Reading and writing numbers to 10 places: Children should be able to read, write. Add and subtract numbers into the billions (1,000,000,000).

Numeration systems: Students should be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, common fractions, and Decimals to the thousandths.

Mixed numbers: Students must understand and be able to add, subtract and multiply mixed numbers. They should also be able to convert a mixed number to an improper fraction A mixed number in an integer followed by a fraction such as 4 ½. 4 ½ converted to an improper fraction is 9/2.

Set of integers: Integers in the form of positive and negative numbers should be taught. Begin with the number line demonstrating -10 though 10, for example, and then teach students how to add and subtract these integers.

Converting Fractions: Students must be able to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Ratio and percent: Students must be able to determine a ratio and convert it to a percentage. For example, a 1:2 ration would equal 50%.

Exponents: Students must also be able to work with exponents which is described as shorthand for multiplication, An example of an exponent is 52 which equals 5X5, or 25.

Customary and metric measurements: Students must be able to determine measurements using customary (American) and metric units and convert between them. Use a chart that covers Kilo through milli.

Extension of geometric concepts: Topics to cover for grade 5 geometry include polygons, types and measurements of angles, perimeter, area, circumference, diameter, and radius. Edhelper.com has a grade 5 geometry worksheet that you can use to guide you through these exercises.

Word problems in daily life: It is very important that a fifth grade be able to use math to solve common daily life problems. Kidzone.com has themed word problems for grade 5 that you can use.

Charts and graphs: picture, bar, line, and circle graphs: The educplace.com website has a great guide for learning data and graphs.

Concept of sampling: Sampling is a statistical practice where random selections are made for research to determine the whole. AAAmath.com has lessons on sampling in the grade six lessons.

I have found that purplemath.com, and aaaamath.com does a great job of explaining these concepts.
