I have often thought about the question “If you were stranded on a deserted island and could take only one compact disc with you, which one would it be?” I mean, I love music so if I could only have one CD, this would be an important decision.
The other day, I caught a bit of the movie Purple Rain on VH1 and thought, “That would be a great CD to take if I could only take one.” I have always loved the soundtrack, having bought it when tapes were still popular. I ended up actually wearing that one out, so I had to buy it again on CD.
As it turns out, I am not the only on that feels that way. Vanity Fair has announced that they will be revealing their list of 50 Greatest Soundtracks next month in a one time magazine called Movie Rocks, which will be distributed to the subscribers of their 14 titles. Can you guess what soundtrack was number one? Purple Rain!
While the entire list will not be released until next month, there are some other titles that were mentioned. Do you remember a little soundtrack called Saturday Night Fever? It will be listed as number eight. That double album still remains a classic thirty years after its release. They also mentioned the soundtrack to Trainspotting. Now I saw the movie, but for some reason, the music of that movie did not stick out in my mind, but it was ranked higher than Saturday Night Fever at number seven!
With Purple Rain filling the number one position, what were others in the top ten? A Hard Day’s Night came in at number two – not a soundtrack you will find on my iPod. Another was The Harder They come – never even heard of that one! But Pulp Fiction, The Graduate, and Superfly were in the top ten – three of my favorites as well. Also found in the top ten were American Graffiti and The Big Chill. I am hoping one of my other favorites, the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack, also makes the list.
What are your favorite soundtracks?
