Financial Assistance for the Single Parent

One of the greatest concerns and challenges for most single parents has to do with finances. Often, a mother will find herself trying to start life over as a single parent with the responsibility of one or more children and little support from the ex-husband. Sad, but this scenario is far too real. Trying to work and balance a home life as a single mom can be more than trying in a number of aspects, especially financial.

When you start adding up all the expenses in a single-parent home, you find that juggle budget can be hard. For instance, you have money going out to the children’s school, transportation expenses, mortgage or rent, utilities, groceries, and the list goes on. The thing to remember as a single parent in this situation is that while you might want to handle everything on your own, you do not have to. The truth is that today, a number of excellent programs are available to ease some of the financial burden.

The last thing you want is for challenges or complications of finances to start building a wedge between you and the kids, which is something that happens. Instead, you need to find a way to put down your pride and reach out for help. I know when I went through my divorce I ended up with two small children. I also found myself in a situation of never having enough money to make ends meet. I felt embarrassed and like a failure until I realized that I was just one of millions.

With a little research, I was able to locate a clothes’ closet at a nearby church where people in the community would bring new and near new clothing. My kids were able to find everything they needed for school. No one knew that my children were wearing hand-me-downs and on many occasions, they were complimented on being so well dressed. I also found an organization known as Angel Food Ministries, which sells $100 worth of groceries each month for a mere $25. I did eventually get back on my feet and my kids were no worse for the wear but the bottom line is that instead of struggling unnecessary, check out government and community organizations to help pull you through a tough time financially.
