Earlier today, I talked about free stuff events, and how wonderful they can be. I also talked about the etiquette involved when attending one. If you missed that earlier article, click here: Free Stuff Events. Now, I’ll talk about how to find these events.
The best way to learn about free stuff events is by word of mouth. Let everyone that you know that you are interested in yard sales and free events. Very often, someone you know knows of an event coming up that is being hosted. Who hosts these types of events? Very often they are held by a family who is cleaning out their items or moving, buy a club (such as a moms club), by a church or by a civic organization.
The next best source of free stuff events is at the end of regular yard sales. Very often, people give away anything that hasn’t sold at the yard sale. You will find the stuff still out with a big free sign on it. Or, at the end of the ask if they will be giving away items for free.
Freecycle.org is a great source of free stuff events. Sometimes these events are organized by the moderators of the local chapter of freecycle and take place in a park or general area, with everyone involved bringing and exchanging stuff. Other times, individuals will post an announcement of their free stuff event, giving a time and directions. Before you announce your own free stuff event on freecycle, check with the moderators. Some chapters frown upon free stuff events or outlaw them within the chapter.
Check advertisements for free stuff sales. I have seen them advertised as free garage sales, garage giveaways, free yard sales, free rummage and more. Do a search through an online classified, such as Craigslist by these keywords to find the sales.
Check with people in your neighborhood who are moving. See if they will be cleaning out their items and would be willing to have a free stuff event. You can even offer to help them put their stuff out for pick up and help them to advertise.
Here is hoping that you find some great treasures!
