Children are truly a blessing. It is a privilege to be a parent. At times it is easy to become frustrated in the busyness of parenthood. Children have bad days and so do parents, and so it is important to step back from time to time and really think about what you love about being a parent as well as things that you would like to do better. It is also important to take time to live in the moment, because the time seems to go by much too quickly.
This week I’ve been blessed to see the cute and wonderful things that my children are doing at their various stages. Some of these things are only wonderful and interesting to me, but that is why my children are special to me. I am the one that gets to care for them and I am the one that is going to witness the way that they grow up. It is important that I have some sort of record of it for them when they are older.
Journals are a great way for children to begin recording their perceptions of growing into adulthood, but you can write letters or corresponding entries in your child’s journal. (I doubt that will work well once your child begins to crave privacy.) Additionally, I don’t think you should read your child’s journals—I mean more of a shared journal that you both work on.
You can also record the moments in your journal that you may share with your children later. You can record the moments with pictures or with video. Remember that the every day craziness is just as important to remember and record as the experiences that you take time to create for your children.
As you learn to look at and recognize those special moments, the joy of parenting comes to the front again. It is wonderful to take time to remember why you are a parent and to see that your sacrifices and hard work are worth it. The love of your children and their accomplishments will have a more far reaching effect than any other project that you can focus on.
