Our First Presidency Message for the month of January comes from Thomas S. Monson. He speaks of reading a book called “The Way to the Western Sea” by David S. Lavender about the travels of Lewis and Clark. As he read of the explorers crossing the raging waters, President Monson says that he pondered upon bridges that might have eased their way.
He goes on to state that all of us are travelers on this journey through life, and that the bridges were put there by our loving Savior who went before us and walked the path, scouting out for danger, and then calling back to us to place our feet carefully so we wouldn’t get hurt. He built bridges we can cross in order to get safely back to Him.
What are those bridges? One is the bridge of obedience. He set us the example of perfect obedience to our Heavenly Father’s plan. He never failed to seek out His Father’s will and then to do it, wholeheartedly and devotedly. If we were to follow such a path, we would be much safer.
Next is the bridge of service. We often read in the scriptures about the healing miracles Christ performed. He raised the dead, healed the sick, enabled the blind man to see. We may not have the power to work these kinds of miracles, but we can certainly serve others with the same kind of dedication.
He also gave us the bridge of prayer. Where would we be without it? The Savior told us to pray always, just as He did. We see frequent examples of prayer coming from the mouth of Jesus Christ in the scriptures.
Christ’s final act was to become the bridge to span the chasm between us and death. As we follow in His footsteps and avoid the pitfalls He pointed out to us, we can follow across His bridge and enter into eternal life.
