Fitness Journal – Healing & Frustration

One of the things I despise about taking medications is how those medications can make you feel. When you are taking muscle relaxants, it can affect your performance of physical exercise. But worse yet, when you’re taking muscle relaxants and pain medication – even in the barest minimums – it can leave you dreaming so vividly that when you wake up, you are actually disoriented and out of sorts.

That’s the problem that confronted my workout today. I had a muscle spasm last night, late and the pain medication was the only thing to get through the fact that my face was killing me again. So today, I was still dealing with the after effects. I felt groggy on and off. I took a nap and once again experienced some of the most powerfully vivid dreams ever – at least this time they were just about an ice cream shop where the wait staff dropped everything – don’t ask.

Today’s Workout

Today was far simpler than yesterday and managed to dodge the work I was trying to get done. I didn’t dodge it willingly, but the frequent storm showers racing through the area prevented outdoor walking. So I managed my 30-minute walk on the treadmill at 2.8 and a steady heart rate of 130. I’ll start pushing it harder when I get off this medication.

Instead of weight training, I spent twenty minutes doing deep and static stretches. I wanted my muscles fully warmed up – ideally so that I could take some advantage of the muscle relaxant, but also because when I am more limber, I sleep better.

Tomorrow is a designated rest day so there will be no journal entry. Keep your fingers crossed for the 4th that we have good weather and I can pound some pavement outdoors.

The purpose of this journal is to share some of the data I record in order to inspire and help others to keep their own fitness journals.
