Five Favorite Books for Single Parents

I tend to accumulate books that relate to subjects in which I have a particular interest. So naturally, I have a batch of books that relate to single parenting. I thought I’d let you know about a few of my favorites in case you’re in the market for some useful resources.

The books are listed in no particular order.

1. Where’s Daddy? How Divorced, Single and Widowed Mothers Can Provide What’s Missing When Dad’s Missing — by Claudett Wassil-Grimm, M.Ed.

This book covers just about every conceivable single Mom situation. It’s a great reference book.

2.The Loss That Is Forever: The Lifelong Impact of the Early Death of a Mother or Father — by Maxine Harris, Ph.D.

This one is for single parents who got that way via the early deaths of our spouses. It explains what your child/ren is/are experiencing and what you can do to help.

3. Positive Discipline for Single Parents: A Practical Guide to Raising Children Who Are Responsible, Respectful and Resourceful — by Jane Nelsen, Cheryl Erwin and Carol Delzer

I posted my interview with Dr. Nelsen here at the Single Parenting Blog on February 11, 2006 (“A Conversation with Jane Nelsen, Co-Author of
‘Positive Discipline for Single Parents'”). Dr. Nelsen told me that “the parenting techniques that we recommend for single parents are very similar to what we recommend to couples.”

4. Sex & the Single Parent: A Guide for Parents Who Find Themselves Back in the Dating Game — by Meg F. Schneider, M.S.W. and Martine J. Byer, C.S.W.

This book provides some really useful, sensitive advice about single parent dating, especially about how to consider its impact on our kids and how to address any issues they may have with it.

5. Chicken Soup for the Single Parent’s Soul: Stories of Hope, Healing and Humor — by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Laurie Hartman and Nancy Vogl

I like to pick this book up whenever I need a pick-me-up! It consists of numerous very short stories by many authors. There seems to be a story that’s right for just about every situation. For more about Nancy Vogl, see my February 2, 2006 interview with her here at the Blog (“Interview with Nancy Vogl, Co-Author of ‘Chicken Soup for the Single Parent’s Soul'”).
