Five For Fighting Fitness

As busy as we can be, it’s important to keep track of how you can squeeze more fitness and healthy choices into your daily habits – because remember, it’s all the little things that add up and mean something in the long run. So rather than bore you with a long introduction, let’s just dive into our five tips for today:

  • Brown bag your lunch – seriously, brown bag it. When you eat out for lunch every day, you are more likely to overeat or eat foods that are rich in fats or carbohydrates. If you brown bag it, you can control not only your portions but be deliberate in your selection of food and not let the rush of the day carry your meal away. Also a brown bag lunch doesn’t require standing in line or waiting for service – so you have extra time on your lunch hour to grab a quick walk after you eat
  • Don’t just stretch out on the couch at night after dinner, consider stretching out fully and loosening up your muscles, it can distress you a great deal more effectively than just crashing on the sofa and turning on the boob tube – if you want to watch tv, consider exercising while you’re doing it – even a brief workout is better than none
  • Coffee breaks? Cut them down – instead of making a pot of coffee here at home, I make a cup of tea or a cup of instant coffee – one cup at a time, I’m more likely to drink water during the day than the coffee or tea, because I have to stop everything to prepare it and the less caffeine is good – so reducing these
coffee breaks benefits you all the way around
  • Develop an ‘active’ social life. Instead of socializing in restaurants or bars, hang out with friends, family and your spouse at the gym or outdoors working out or even doing gardening – I’ve actually enjoyed several afternoons weeding in my yard and in a friend’s yard, all the while catching up with them on life, the universe and everything
  • Clean the house – cleaning the house – especially if you’re vigorous about it, burns calories. My daughter laughs when I start the race around the house to clean. I do bends, dips, squats, pushes, shoves and speed walking – vacuuming can be an especially challenging activity if you do it at speed

How many of these tips do you already incorporate into your daily routine?
