Keep your décor costs down while still giving the rooms in your home a look and feel you love.
1) If you can’t afford new carpet try adding an area rug. While certain styles can be expensive, you can find affordable options at discount centers like Wal-Mart, K-mart, Target, and others. Whether you choose a smaller 4’ x 6’ with an accompanying runner and throw rug, or a larger 6’ x 9’ rug, you can change the look of your flooring for less.
2) Add a new piece of furniture. You might be thinking there isn’t a piece of furniture available for under $50.00 that is worth having, but you might be surprised. Shop consignment stores, estate sales, used furniture stores, and antique shops for bargains. Also, don’t hesitate to inquire about trading. If you have a piece that you don’t mind letting go of you may be able to trade it (along with a little cash) for a really great piece for your room. The same applies to artwork.
3) Recover a piece of furniture. Slipcovering or reupholstering a large piece can change the feel of the entire room. Look for quality fabric on sale and ask about ends of rolls that include enough fabric but have been marked down.
4) Get out your paint roller. You should be able to paint any average size room for about $50.00. For large rooms or those with high ceilings, look for sales or ask about “oops” paint as described in yesterday’s decorating article. Changing the color of the walls will make a dramatic impact even if you don’t do anything else in that space.
5) Add architectural touches. Add some molding. A mirror works great to mimic a window in a space that doesn’t have enough light. Also, see Adding Architectural Elements.
