Five Last Minute Preparations for Winter Weather

If you have adequately prepared your home and family for winter weather you can sit back and relax while the storm howls around you. There are a few last minute preparations that you may want to make in case you lose power. Here are five easy things to do to help you adjust quickly to a power outage.

1) You should make sure that you have alternate sources of lighting easily available. You can store a flashlight in your nightstand drawer. You may want to get your emergency candles out of the cupboard and put them in a place that is more easily accessible.

2) Baking is a great way to spend time together during a storm. You may want to bake some goodies at the beginning of a storm to help tide you through. This could include homemade bread, cookies and other foods your family enjoys eating that can be stored easily. This will help you to be even more prepared if you don’t have time to run out to the store.

3) You can prepare your back up heating and energy sources. This may mean bringing wood into the garage or finding your kerosene heaters. It may be putting your power generator in a place that is easier to locate.

4) If you live in a warmer area, you may want to dig out the parkas, gloves and snowsuits, so that when the storm is finished, your children can spend time outside in the snow. You may want to dig out some of the sand toys as well, since they can be used to help form snow sculptures.

5) You may want to prepare bedding and sleeping bags so that you can all camp close to the fireplace. This can help your family stay warm, and make the storm seem like more of an adventure rather than an inconvenience.
